Shape and Ovality Control
Shape, ovality, defects
3D Shaper is an innovative solution for identifying macroscopic shape defects and dimensions out of tolerances in line during the manufacturing processes of flat products (such as strips) and long products (such as billets and pipes). It finds application in identifying those defects in which there is excess or defect of material, such as scratches, waves and surface differences in general. It is mainly used to identify cases in which there are differences from the expected standard of the exterior shape of strips, non conformity of diameters of round pipes or measures discrepancies of rods, hollow profiles and billets.

It uses laser technology and is equipped with linear laser sensors (generally in number of 3 arranged so as to cover a 120° or 4 arranged so as to cover a 90° angle each, reconstructing the shape in section of the object at 360°. Depending on the size of the object to be measured, type of sensors, dimensions of the frame and distances of the sensors from the object can vary significantly. The system is designed to have no moving parts, but uses static sensors appropriately fixed to the frame which guarantees protection, correct alignment and use insecurity. The invariance of the positioning tolerances and the distance from the piece from inspect make it a system that does not require excessive care in control
of the alignment of the mechanics, if compared with parts in translation/rotation (e.g. gyroscopic).

The detection of the shape and the quantification of the dimensions occurs through the determination of the distance of the object from the measurement sensor. The reconstruction of distance vectors represents the shape of the linear/conical/rounded surface measured. The acquisition of data from the sensors and the processing and presentation software itself is carried out by a PAC system, which is a PLC integrated into a PC.
